Resolved Question: How do I lay hardwod floor around marble fireplace slab?
I am going to lay hardwood flooring in my living room. I have assisted, but never performed this solo. I understand how everything "should" go...I'm just having a bit of trouble envisioning laying the floor around the marble slab in front of the fireplace? Do I just treat the slab like the walls and go within a half inch. Can I lay the quarter round by only nailing to the floor (can't nail to the slab like you would the wall).

Resolved Question: I have to write a short narrative story in english class. This is my story. Could someone give me input?
My life changed in one quick flash. I saw it coming, but, I never anticipated how dramatically one night would change my life forever. My name is Konstanc Gallas. I am an outsider. I can’t talk or touch anyone that I have ever loved. That is, without repercussions. I am lost. Night and day no longer blend together. It isn’t easy to be at relax , especially when her story must be heard… I live in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. From what I am told, I was adopted, but, born and raised here. I always knew in the back of my mind that I was different from others. The odd kid. As a young girl weird things would happen to me, that I couldn’t even explain. I could look and hear others that were no longer here in physical form. I didn’t accept my abilities, that is, until my senior year in high school. I was driving down the interstate, on a dark starry night, with my top down, the wind blowing in my hair always helped clear my mind. When every of a sudden I heard a lady voice say “ turn”. I crashed into a tree. I could look myself laying there. As I hovered over myself , I screamed at myself to receive up. I heard the voice again, it was a hum, a tune that I didn’t recognize but was compelled to follow. I was running through the forest when I stumbled upon a place that was familiar The place was huge, the walls were carved and marble, with a huge mirror fireplace and staircases that intertwined. The place was beautiful. Elegant, and abandoned. Then I saw her. The girl that was in my ,vivid, reoccuring dreams, but something was wrong. I was her. I was Sarah, and, I was left to die. Sarah and her friends thought it would be chilly to play at an abandoned mansion. It was just a harmless game of hide and seek. Or was it? My pal was chasing me when I tripped and hit my head. Everything slipped away, I was blind……the last word I heard, was, “turn” and then everything went icy, my friends turned me over. I was dead. They were scared and they left me there dead. They never told and I was never found. “ find me”…… “ you must tell my story”…… “go”.. I awakened, to find myself still in the school parking lot, sitting in my car with the keys still in my hand. I was shaking. Who would I tell? I confided in my brother. Shockingly he believed me and wanted to investigate. We found her. That day changed my life forever.

Resolved Question: What is the stone piece in front of fireplace called?
We recently had a home built, and have wood floors in the living room. We also have gas logs and as much searching as I have done, can't for the life of my figure out what the rock or marble piece you can purchase to put on the floor in front of the fireplace is called. I was thinking pad, but this is for protecting kids from falling and hitting corners. There is nothing on the floor in front of our fireplace, and for decoration purposes, would adore to put something there but obviously if I can't find it I can't buy it. I know this probably sounds crazy, but can someone please help me locate a name for such a thing? THANK YOU in advance! Maybe I should explain better. A herth is a built up piece aorund a fireplace. I am simply looking for a rectangular piece made of tile that would sit directly on the floor in front of my fireplace.

Resolved Question: what kind of design features make a house grand?
I think solid wood doors down a shadowy corridor, fireplaces, timber floorboards... but I can't think of much else. I guess it really depends on the person and what they find grand. For example when i think of grand old houses i don't think of marble. high ceilings, is another and big windows with expansive landscape views =P

Open Question: What would be a good concluding statement for my history essay?
My essay is about the three North American Colonies and I describe the differences between the three colonies in religion, education and leisure. I don't really like my introductory Statement but it is: "English settlers established three colonies in North America. They can be same and different." Would I have to change that statement to receive a good Concluding statement? What should I change it to? I need help!!! Thanks! :) ******If you actually want to read the essay, thats it: English settlers established three colonies in North America. They can be same and different. every three colonies were very religious. It was an important part. kids grew up reading the bible. Especially in New England, Religion was very strict. People had to go to church every day, and everybody had to go. If you did not go to church, you would have to go to jail. The only excuse not to go was illness. The Services could last for up to five hours. The Southern colonies had religious freedom, which means that you could worship whatever you wanted to. The Middle Colonies had religious freedom too, but a lot of people were Quakers. In the 1730s, the Great Awakening swept through the colonies. It was spurred by the feeling that people had lost their faith. The Great Awakening had a powerful effect on the colonies, it made people believe that everybody is equal in Gods eyes. The colonies got an open heart and desire to know Gods truth. Education was very different in each of the colonies. In the Middle colonies religious differences between the Quakers, Catholics, Jews, Baptists, and other groups slowed down the growth of public schools. Every religious group had to decide for itself how to educate the kids. Some built church schools and other decided to have parents tutor their kids at home. In the Southern colonies, wealthy people hired a tutor for their younger kids and sent the older ones to distant cities, to complete their education there. The other people would receive together and hire a teacher for a tiny group of kids. Only in New England, towns had to have public schools. That was just because of religious faith. The Puritans wanted their kids to be able to read the bible. Schools would just be one room with a chimney and a fireplace. There would usually be just one book to tutor the alphabet, syllables and prayers. every three colonies had lots of work and not a lot of free time. Workers would combine work with play by organizing bees and frolics. They had “chopping bees” for example. If new settlers came they had to clear their land from every the trees and other people helped so it would be more fun. The kids had some simple toys, such as dolls, marbles, and tops. They also enjoyed playing tag, blindman’s bluff, coasting down snowy hills and the game stoolball, which was like the English game of cricket. Adults played bowling green and a game like backgammon called tick tack, or the game of pool. Especially fox hunting, horse racing, cockfighting, and bull baiting were popular sports. Card playing was very popular in the New England Colonies. Most of the leisure activities were the same in every three colonies.

Resolved Question: How do you think my current housing sounds?
I live in a family of 5. We have 3 cars, a scion xb, a honda mini van, and an s2000 convertible. We live in a home that is priced between $476K – $732K, it has 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths. A living room with a fireplace, a formal dining room, a big kitchen with red marble counter tops and an island with a dining area. Attached to the kitchen is an okay sized deck with a view of the sunset and the hudson river. There is a 2 car garage and a very big master bedroom. We have a big basement that is used more for entertaining rather than storage. I was recently reading an article about how you can tell if you are middle class. I was just curious what i would be classified below based on the info i have provided?

Voting Question: Argh! I have moved into my boyfriend's family home (his parents no longer live there so it is just us two now)?
BUT the living room is a catastrophic design faux pas! Imagine if you will a white dado rail over which is cream wallpaper with a scattered design of tiny peach/dark cream rectangles. below the dado rail is cream and peach striped wallpaper. The sofa and curtains are dark navy blue and the carpet is dark brown with flecks of black in it. There is a fireplace (victorian design) in cream marble and wooden surround. None of it goes together and it gives me a headache! Apparently the carpet isn't that old and also cost a fair bit, the sofa (why blue!?!?!) will cost a fortune to reupholster! This means the only things I have license to change are the walls and curtains! I was thinking a light blue/teal feature wall and the relax plain! I would adore to just do the whole lot but I don't want to offend or seem too bossy etc if you know what I mean? =s So....any ideas / advice as to what I should do colour scheme wise???

Resolved Question: Can someone help me with rap lyrics please?
Can someone write rap lyrics for me please? I'm doing a project on the elements of design ( explaining what they are ) and the guy that was supposed to write the lyrics dropped out and I'm stuck with having to start from scratch if I can't receive any lyrics - I have to post this on youtube for my media class so I WILL credit you in the video. Please Guys I REALLY need some help . Elements of design needed in the rap: The Elements of design play an important role in the creation and success of a piece of art, whether it's for outdoor, indoor, digital or print medium. These elements are: Space Space is the area provided for a particular purpose. It may have two dimensions (length and width), such as a floor, or it may have three dimensions (length, width, and height). Space includes the background, foreground and middle ground. Line Line is the mark made by a moving point, such as a pencil or brush. The edges of shapes and forms also create lines. It is the basic component of a shape drawn on paper. Lines and curves are the basic building blocks of two dimensional shapes like a home's plan. Experiment in design by adding or changing lines such as the lines of the floor plan of a home. Color Color is the most expressive element of art and is seen by the way light reflects off a surface. Color is used to create illusion of depth, as red colors seem to arrive forward while blue seems to recede into the distance. Color, and particularly contrasting is also used to draw the attention to a particular part of the image. On some cases of interior design, color can be added to increase visual appeal such as the natural colors of wood of a china cabinet. Color may add visual appeal to a home decor just as colored flowers can add beauty to a field on a prairie. Shape Shape is an area enclosed by lines or curves. It can be geometric or organic. Importantly, a shape automatically creates a around it. Shapes in home decor and interior design can be used to add interest, style, theme to a design like a door. Shape in interior design depends on the function of the object like a kitchen cabinet door. Natural shapes forming patterns on wood or rock may help increase visual appeal in interior design. Texture Texture is the feeling and visual feel of the fabrics, colors, and room accessories. There are two types of texture; Tactile, or visual texture, and texture which you can detect with your five senses. Texture like grass sheets on a wall, or white pebbles embedded in a concrete wall gives a three dimensional look to the wall and a few of shades of its colors. Texture is the roughness of the surface of a material. Surfaces with same or similar textures like fireplace marble tiles and drywall usually look more visually appealing. The quality of finishes of surfaces in home interior design and even on automobiles are important. Smoothening and polishing wood wall panelling neatly and uniformly usually improves its finish and so its appearance. A smooth and polished surface on a marble tile is also a texture, and smooth and uniform quality finishes can enhance the visual appeal of natural material finishes like marble tiles on a wall. Smooth mirror reflective finish on a marble bathroom countertop enhances its looks. Form Form may be created by the forming of two or more shapes. It may be enhanced by tone, texture and color. Form is considered three-dimensional showing height, width and depth. It can be illustrated or constructed. Value Value helps with Form. It gives objects depth and perception. Value is also referred to as tone. Basically shading. Type Type is the use of letterform to add a message that would be otherwise challenging to create through the other elements. It has to name the element and give a tiny explanation about the element . It is very very dorky- I know... The guy in the group was going to create the lyrics and record the rap in the studio and then email us the file and we were going to play the file over the video we were shooting of a female lyp-syncing the tune. I need any lyrics by tomorrow at 7:30 pm - if we don't have at least a copy of lyrics in hand we have to cancel the reservations for our video equipment rental, change venues, and inform the people we were using as extras they wont be needed. Then we will have to start from scratch. Our ENTIRE project must be completed by Oct. 30 to allow for editing by Nov.1 He screwed us over completely

Resolved Question: About how much should I expect to pay for a custom built fireplace surround and mantel?
About 8 feet wide, curio shelves on the side. Curved base, mantle. The hood would go every the way up to the ceiling (9 ft), with crown molding at the top, and pillars and corbels holding up the mantel. every made from oak plywood and solid oak, with a tiled marble base. This is new construction, and I already have the gas insert. Just looking for a generic "about this much" figure, before I start looking around.

Resolved Question: Log burner v old traditional fireplace in old house?
Any advice from interior designers or renovators please!! I've got a 400 yrs old home. In the living room there is a very old black fireplace, it's got a black canopy and a fancy little black surround bit that patterned. The mantelpiece is marble but in a bad state although we're keeping it. The fireback and chimney breast needs work, ie re-build and chimney insert. We really fancy a log burner and the log burner man said we could take off the black canopy and leave the fancy trim bit that surrounds it and stand the log burner in front on some old quarry tiles we have. The tiles that surround the flame back are ancient, a pear pattern, but most of them are missing or damaged, every that bit would be ripped out and replaced with a flat back steel piece for the log burner to stand in front of. if I take off the canopy I'll store it in the Attic for future generations to put back if need be..... I'm really in a dilemma about the whole thing, I don't know which way to go. A log burner would be better as the flame sometimes blows back and it's difficult work looking after a real flame. What do you think? should I renovate old fireplace or replace with log burner?

Resolved Question: Please constructively criticize this piece.?
Her amber brown eyes scanned the room in front of her. They were still there, asleep. It hadn’t been some crazy dream she’d had. She, Halle Cherise, and her best pal Rachelle Kennebeck had really taken in three complete strangers. And it seemed that they had been through torture. The girl had a broken wrist and one of the guys had a broken leg. The other man had deep lashes every over him that the hospital couldn’t receive to cease bleeding for a half an hour. Their wounds told the story, only it felt incomplete. Halle walked back out through the hallway and into the living room that was open to the dining room and kitchen. Smells of food overwhelmed her as she sat in a leather seat, her eyes gazing into the fireplace that was ablaze. “Something wrong, Hal?” Rachelle asked, pulling her thick, gently curly chestnut hair into a pony-tail. “Nothing. Just thinking about last night.” Halle replied, looking over at Rachelle. “What are you making oatmeal for? You hate it.” Rachelle turned and looked at her pal and shrugged, “I know, but I thought the other three would. Plus, we had it in the cupboard…” her sentence trailed off as her keen brown eyes glazed over. “Do you want any help?” Halle asked, beginning to stand up. Rachelle waved her down. “It’s oatmeal. I think I can do it without burning down the home.” she smiled at her pal. Halle sat back in the seat and looked around. The home felt different. It wasn’t the same maroon walls with umber accents like it had been the day before. The pictures on the marble mantle piece didn’t even sit the same anymore. It unsettled Halle to know that, because of these people, she felt their whole world changing at an unyielding pace. That because of the three people laying in the guest bedroom her life would never be the same. Rachelle’s life was never going to be the same. Neither of them would look through the same eyes ever again. Halle knew that what she and Rachelle had done the night before was a positive, but an unforgettable event to redirect their fates. Halle found her reverie interrupted by the alarm of the microwave, blaring that the food inside was cooked. Rachelle opened it and closed it again, placing the hot, ceramic bowls onto the counters and stirred them. every the while she was bouncing to the music playing through her ear buds. Halle sighed, wondering how her best pal could still be dancing around while she felt so… melancholy about what was taking place. “Halle?” “Rachelle?” she moved her gaze to meet her pal’s quickly. “Do you think you could go look if the rescued are up yet? If the aren’t, it’s okay, but the doctor told us that they shouldn’t snooze through meals. And breakfast is ready if they are up.” “Sure. I’ll be right back then, don’t receive into trouble.” Halle winked and got up from her comfortable seat. Tyler opened his eyes, finding himself in a warm bed, underneath a mint-green, thick comforter. He rubbed his eyes of snooze and tried to receive out of bed. Here he noticed that his leg was bound in a cast, having obviously been broken in the battle the night before. The battle the night before… He thought to himself, now reaching for his gun. It lay on the bedside table, unloaded. The clips were precariously leaning on the edge of the table, ready to fall at any moment. He looked around, admiring the work that had definitely gone into the room he and his friends occupied. He liked the compliments of greens and wheat colors, along with the subtle blues in the comforters and shams. It was simplistically beautiful, and it made him grin. And foe wouldn’t put his gun next to him, wouldn’t put his leg in a cast, wouldn’t put him in a nicely furnished and decorated room. The foe plainly wouldn’t leave him and his friends alive. So, for now, he felt safe.

Resolved Question: Replace a cast iron fireback without removing fireplace?
Hi. I am renovating a marble fireplace in a bedroom. It has a with a cast iron surround (18" opening) but no fireback. The original was smashed out, and the opening cemented up to fit a floor standing gas heater. My question is, can anyone recommend a cast iron fireback that could be installed without removing the fireplace from the wall. I have opened out the whole space behind the flame and there is currently no hood so there is a bit of room to manoeuvre. Also this fireplace will only be for show, not for use so it doesn't need to be airtight! Thanks Adam I'm in North Yorkshire. Adam

Resolved Question: What sort of primer should I use to prep a marble fireplace?
Ok I know it's an odd question but I'm a childminder and have recently moved home, the room which I have bagged as my playroom had a fireplace in with a "marble" fireback. Originally I tried to stick a piece of painted hardboard against it as my blackboard, but this wasn't successful. Resolved Question: Where can I get a custom made piece of brass (or any other metal that is gold and shiny)?
We installed a fireplace insert recently but did not buy the optional metal surround because they look horrible. So, we plan on putting either a difficult rock (marble, granite, etc.) or tiles around the insert and then a wooden mantle around that. Thing is, the insert has a beveled edge with a couple of holes in it which are intended to screws and such when installing the surround. So, we want to somehow receive a brass piece to fit around it for a nice finish. Any ideas? Here is a picture of the insert we purchased. We do NOT have that green surround, only the insert itself and the tiny skirt of black metal surrounding it. http://www.napoleonfireplaces.com/Inserts/wood_inserts/1101.html Oh, also, how much would something like that cost?

Resolved Question: Is there a stainless steel fireplace insert conversion for my home?
I have a traditional brick firebox with glass doors in my home. The previous owner built a horrible looking pink marble surround which I want to tear out. What I would ideally like is a very modern looking fireplace opening like the one seen on the red wall here: http://www.fireplaces-store.com/. Fuel type is not an issue because we will hardly ever use it as a true fireplace. However, it may be too difficult to pipe in natural gas, so that may not be an option. Just looking for a good retrofit into my existing firebox.

Resolved Question: How much do you think my house is worth?
My home is in Hayden, Idaho in a very desirable neighborhood. It was built in 1977, and we payed around 150,000 for it. Then we put around 210,000 in to it, totally remodeling it. It is 6 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, with two of the bedrooms being master sweets. It is 3,400 square feet on a beautiful acre with great landscaping, a 1000 square foot deck, a 2 story tree home, a road leading to the back, rv parking, a hot tub, and a storage barn. It has great curb appeal, newly painted (white with black shutters), 2 stories with a nice front porch. The family room is about 17 - 17 square feet and very open with a rock fireplace to the ceiling. The kitchen is very big with granite counters, and there are wood floors the whole way through. 2 bedrooms down, 4 up. The master is way bigger than most masters, with wood walls and ceiling with carpet, and also has a rock electric fireplace. The living room is huge and beautiful, with wood ceiling, yellow walls, and so much sun coming through. Its about 25 - 30 ft, and is used as a music room (for harp and piano). The stairs are average, and the upstairs rooms average about 14 by 15 feet each, other than the master which is big. every the bathrooms have marble, and one is Greek looking with a rock shower. There is an intercom, a movie closet, a big laundry room with an attic down the hallway to the master, only a 2 car garage but lots of parking, but the inside can be dark sometimes if every the lights are off, but every in every it is great. We listed it at 675,000 and have gone down to 595,000. Realitors think it should be about 625000. What is your opinion.

Resolved Question: Bought a house... Does this count as fixtures/fittings?
Hi there! My hubby and I bought a home, and got the keys on Friday. every seems to be in order, except for one thing. The previous owners took the grates from both fireplaces! This renders them useless until we buy new grates. The description of home stated: Attractive contemporary flame surround. Granite inset and hearth / Marble flame surround. Cast iron inset and polished granite hearth Does this mean they can take the grates, or are they fixtures and fittings which should be left? We are thinking of mentioning it to our solictor, but we don't want to kick up a stink if it's usual to take the grates. Having said that these people took everything that wasn't screwed down, including every single bulb! Many thanks.

Resolved Question: dont want to drill marble to fix to wall, it's really heavy any ideas. guy says use silicon to join parts?
I purchased a marble fireplace which comes in three parts, hearth, back and mantle. the supplier says to join together using builders silicone and then drill holes in side, to fix to wall. Obviously I cant receive in to back of fireplace to fix to wall once it is fixed together, but I don't particularly want to drill holes in the outside marble. Also, the wall is only plasterboard, so no great fixing available anyway. Any other ideas.

Resolved Question: Can dodgy sex save England's stately homes?
http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/the_way_we_live/article6848525.ece As it built most of them, anyway, the chances seem reasonable. Also, why is the august Times going into these tabloid stories? I'm shocked, frankly. Sample paragraph: 'The same aristocrat also rents his home to Emma Sayle, the owner of Killing Kittens, a club for what she calls the “sexually elite”. Her guests, lured by the exclusivity of orgying below gilt chandeliers, gibber excitedly about the “ravishingly decadent atmosphere”, the “vast marble fireplaces” and “sexual receive-off” of seeing naked bodies slinking around in faded Georgian splendour. “It sounds weird,” says a 29-year-old regular, “but I like to think how many people have had sex in these huge rooms before me — even hundreds of years ago.” The Duke of Argyll had 450 illegitimate kids, thanks to the droit to seigneur, jus primae noctis, etc. If lucky, the kids would be sent to Eton Harrow, given money, etc.

Resolved Question: How can a small bussiness become bigger?
Since the Economy is so bad right now, and we depend on my dad for money and stuff. He had this long time dream of making his tiny little bussiness of Marble&Granite bigger. He's a contstructor worker. I just need some advices that I can give my dad. Cause I feel sorry for him. Like what should he do to receive more customers and stuff? How should he advertise? (he's been a contrusction worker for almost 8 years or so) (he puts marble/granite in kitchen countertops, floors, stairs, fireplaces etc ,and remodels kitchen cabinets, and also paints bathrooms/kitchen walls.) HOW SHOULD HE receive MORE JOBS? LIKE ADVERTISE AND SUCH?? Please and Thankyou :) Aha..
